Riverside Rose
03:49
|
|||
On the banks of the Detroit River
I was looking into your eyes
We had the heartbeat of modern America
Rushing by our sides
And I met you in the summertime
The air was hot, you were on my mind
And I asked you would you be my rose tonight?
Would you be my Riverside rose tonight?
Just two kids staring down this city
Through a thin sheet of Chrysler glass
Four feet on the floor, two on the wheel
Yeah our hearts were beating fast
We went flying down that county line
That car caught fire, you were on my mind
And I asked you would you be my rose tonight?
Would you be my Riverside rose tonight?
Well city lights fade out of town
Into a rearview sky of black
Some rings and some vows
Four decades went down
A couple old grand folks now
When you fell down on our front lawn
That look in your eyes, I knew we were gone
So I asked you could I be your rose tonight?
Could I be your Riverside rose tonight?
Be my rose tonight when I’m lying here wide awake
Be my rose tonight when I don’t know how much more medicine I can take
Be my rose tonight when the second hands finally wind down
Be my rose tonight when I’m leaving this town
To go back to
The banks of the Detroit River
When I was looking into your eyes
We had the heartbeat of modern America
Rushing by our side
And I met you in the summertime
The air was hot, you were on my mind
And I asked you would you be my rose tonight?
Would you be my Riverside rose tonight?

Kushog Lake
04:07
|
|||
Spending too many days beside hospital beds
But this time is different
At least that’s what grandma said
She said I’ve had a good run
I’m due to be done
Take care of those kids and remember the fun
Take care of those crumb crunchers
Remember the fun
And I remember
Waking up to those Kushog Lake loons
They were howling like wolves in the foggy morning
Now I’ll sing a song of a day that’s long gone
About four little footsteps
Running down your front lawn
To the lake
It’s what I remember
The exact perfect mix of tender and rough
To put up with Grandpa Tom she must have been tough
Now I’ll miss the stories from so long ago
And spoiling your grandkids
There was rarely a no
And spoiling your grandkids
There was rarely a no
So wake me up to those Kushog Lake loons
They were howling like wolves in the foggy morning
Now I’ll sing a song of a day that’s long gone
About four little footsteps running down your front lawn
To the lake
It’s what I remember
Out here in the fall air
With all of your friends
We’re all gonna miss you
But that’s not how this ends
This ends with four great grandkids
Who all knew you well
They’ll miss you like hell
But one day they just might get to
Wake me up to those Kushog Lake Loons
They were howling like wolves in the foggy morning
Now I’ll sing a song of a day that’s long gone
About four little footsteps
Running down your front lawn
To the lake
It’s what I remember
So wake me up to those Kushog Lake Loons
They were howling like wolves in the foggy morning
Now I’ll sing a song of a day that’s long gone
About four little footsteps
Running down your front lawn
To the lake
It’s what I remember

The Quiet I Never Knew
05:02
|
|||
When they put you in the ground
I didn’t make a sound
Just stood there watching the birds over the lake
And fumbling with a guitar pick in my pocket
It was quiet like I’ve never felt before
It was old friends waiting in cars with closed doors
It was the quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
Like windmills spinning out of time
‘Til you blink to make them fine
It’s like humming out a foggy line
Cuz I was thinking about you and kinda forgot the rhyme
It was all that I could do to make you proud
Made a simple toast and then crashed down
To the quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
We were walking down Michigan
Before you got so sick again
Banana belt moon was low
And we were laughing like you almost dodged a bullet oh
It was Beck and DJ Windows 98
It was staying out until you said it's late
It was the quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
Sitting in your old man's house at night
Just trying to get the moments right
The doors are all shut tight
But the ghost of you blows them open almost every night
The laughter stops and waits for a hello
But the only sound’s the blowing New Year’s snow
And it’s blowing
Like the quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew
The quiet I never knew

Canadian Winter
04:42
|
|||
I’m gonna build us all a boat
So we can sail out in the water
There I’ll keep you safe
From things like big fish and crashing ships
We’ll find a little time
To be alone there on the water
We’ll find a little time
I’ll teach us both how to swim
Cuz summer’s always ending
With a flat lake sky that’s bending
Forwards as we move forward
And get into the winter
But the winter winds are cold
And we’ll freeze dead on the water
We’ll have to find some skates
To make our way back to land
And when we finally get to a place
Where the wind and the waves are forgotten
There I’ll find some space
We’ll build a home of our own
Cuz there’s no hand of Franklin
And all the good sea songs are taken
I’m aching
At the thought of making it out
Making it out, making it out
Of this Canadian winter
Now the fire crackles hot
As eight eyes look down upon me
The other eight still here
Watching me limp through the year
And there ain’t no escaping
These worn hearts they’re built for breaking
We’re shaken
But we’re making it out
Making it out, making it out
Of this Canadian winter
