about

I still have not figured out how a studio full of excellent musicians couldn't tell me that this song was way way too long. It was written while I was back home from school in Strathroy a few years before it was recorded. I was still pretty deep into Kerouac at the time and I can see the stream of consciousness style in the lyrics to this tune. The gardenside lights of my parents place in Strathroy vs. the big city dance. Probably my most "popular" song early on, we had a lot of fun in the breakdown.

lyrics

Oh well the lights out in the garden
Shone on flowers in the night
Casting shadows like a tapestry
Over every rock in sight
But one flower it was missing
From the illuminance and glow
One flower on the outside
With nowhere left to go

In the morning gardeners came and went
And time, oh time they did spend
Casting dirt around with rakes
To cover up mistakes that they had made
We can’t expect to be farmers these days

Bright lights in the sky tonight
My delight
Won’t you show me how to dance
On the top of a bar
Tell me how’d we get this far
From the earth that reeks of depth and design

We were
Strangers in an open ocean
Falling with the tide
Friends lost lovers travelling
With arms outstretched and wide
We had no time to waste
To hesitate
We took the here for now
Replaced emptiness with common sense
That’s no sense anyhow

We loved
To talk about the past and only
Try to make it last
One more minute
More than we could both bare
Well it doesn’t matter now that anywhere
Is better off than here
So let's just run, run, run away
From the places we found dear
And sing sad slow melodies as lives carry on

We were
Strangers in an open ocean
Falling with the tide
Friends lost lovers travelling
With arms outstretched and wide
We had no time to waste
To hesitate
We took the here for now
Replaced emptiness with common sense
That’s no sense anyhow

We loved
To talk about the past and only
Try to make it last
One more minute
More than we could both bare
Well it doesn’t matter now that anywhere
Is better off than here
So let's just run, run, run away
From the places we found dear
And sing sad slow melodies as lives carry on

Well the lights out in the garden
Shone on flowers in the night
Casting shadows like a tapestry
Over every rock in sight
But one flower it was missing
From the illuminance and glow
One flower on the outside
With nowhere left to go in the morning

In the morning
We sang
Don’t take me down
To that place I know so well
It’s dark and it’s cold
It’s forsaken, it’s old

Don’t take me down
To that place I’m sorry well
I should start to scold
Routines in this mold

Well the lights out in the garden
Shone on flowers in the night
Casting shadows like a tapestry
Over every rock in sight
But one flower it was missing
From the illuminance and glow
One flower on the outside
With nowhere left to go
In the morning
